Soundgarden "Been Away Too Long" Song Review — 5 out of 5 stars

"Been Away Too Long" isn't just everything Soundgarden fans have been waiting for since 1996, it's everything rock 'n' roll fans at large have been waiting for as well.
The first single from the band's forthcoming, King Animal, due out November 13, is as intriguing, infectious, and incendiary as the band's best fare from Badmotorfinger and Superunknown— but there's a rabid, feral new vigor. "Been Away Too Long" immediately kicks into a high gear with Kim Thayil's distinctive six-string crunch, as Matt Cameron's towering percussion drives forward in tandem with the steamroll of Shepherd's bass. Chris Cornell sounds heavenly haunting as he croons, "I've been away for too long".
There's an eerie lead line that peeks through the distorted crunch as everything spirals into the uneasy psychedelic bliss of Cornell's bridge. It's unpredictable, unique, and undeniably Soundgarden at their best.
This is our first sliver of King Animal, and it's a glimpse into the decade's best rock record. Welcome back gentlemen you've been away for too long.
