Soundgarden "Live to Rise" Song Review — 4.5 out of 5 stars

A mammoth riff snakes through a bombastic beat and then descends into an elegantly somber acoustic guitar. That's the one-two punch which kicks off, "Live to Rise", Soundgarden's single from Avengers Assemble [Music from the Motion Picture]. The musical action mirrors that of the highly anticipated superhero blockbuster quite fittingly, and the title is a propos as the Seattle juggernaut—Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron—resurrects real rock 'n' roll once more with this cut.
"Live to Rise" illuminates all of the dynamics inherent in the band's towering sound. Thayil's chug sounds as fierce as ever matched by the intensity of his wah-ed out shredding. Cameron still hits so hard he could shake the Space Needle, while Shepherd's bass playing remains potently destructive. At the eye of the storm, Cornell volleys between a poetically intriguing verse and explosive refrain on par with his best hooks.
It's heavy. It's psychedelic. It's vulnerable. It's everything Soundgarden should be. The real superheroes have assembled for this track.
