Spike Lee has been tapped by producers to turn the struggling Broadway musical Passing Strange, an autobiographical work created by artist Stew, into a film. The director will shoot three of the financially troubled musical's performances. Two of the performances will feature an audience and one will not.
The producers of the musical hope to air Lee's finished film on a to be determined cable network. Passing Strange has enjoyed a positive critical reception, having earned seven Tony nominations and a slew of good reviews, but is having trouble filling house seats. The well-received show is about a black artist hailing from Los Angeles who heads overseas to cultural breeding grounds like Berlin and Amsterdam to find inspiration.
