Are you ready for blood, sweat, and flames?
Le Butcherettes tap into the timeless art of encoding a message inside a blast of energy. It's something that The Stooges and MC5 perfected back in the day, and the trio of Teri Gender Bender [vocals, guitar], Chris Common [drums], and Jamie Aaron [bass] do better than anybody these days. Teri can sound completely unfettered, yet hypnotic a la Siouxsie and the Banshees or completely charged up as if she summoned the soul of Southern California punk back to life. However, Le Butcherettes distinctly remain their own beast. That's the most wonderful thing about this unholy trinity. They're unlike anybody else out there. A Raw Youth, out September 18 via Ipecac Records, upholds that individuality in blood, sweat, and flames.
If you haven't experienced the band yet, new single "Shave The Pride" is as good of a place to start as any. It charges ahead at breakneck speeds on a jagged guitar strut and pounding grooves before slipping into the fiery chant refrain. Teri steers the ship with deft confidence and charisma, letting her primal vocal prowess shine. You can chant along, and her lyrics also make you think. It's the kind of show you leave feeling uplifted yet ready to change the world too—in your own way of course.
There's a fluidity to Le Butcherettes that makes their music even more identifiable. The sound veers between garage punk, alternative, and indie, never settling on one yet distinctly nailing all. It's a dose of honesty and power. Moreover, Teri's got the presence to become a modern icon. She gives a positive message and image to the masses. She's the kind of artist who can incite females (and males) to pick up guitars and microphones for ages to come. "Shave The Pride" is another milestone and a start. Wait till you experience A Raw Youth.
