British actor Steve Coogan has accepted $64,000 in damages over the News of the World phone hacking scandal. It's a small amount, but it's about principle not the pay out. The paper essentially had people hack into celebrities' phones and listening to messages. They also checked messages on the cell phone of a missing girl, causing her family to think she was still alive, which is deplorable and reprehensible. These acts caused the paper to shut down and cease operations. It was a big scandal/deal, given the paper's age and longevity prior to the scandal.
The actor was targeted by a private investigator working for the now-defunct British tabloid and his cell phone voicemail messages were allegedly spied upon.
Coogan was among a group of nine claimants who agreed a settlement with parent company News International, per WENN. So was musician Pete Doherty.
What do you think of the News of the World scandal? Should there be more reparations based on principle?
