Sugar Ray Finishes First Record In Six Years

Sugar Ray have revealed the details behind their first new disc in more than six years. Due out July 21 through Pulse/Fontana/Universal, Music For Cougars is described by Billboard.com as a return "to the lazy grooves, easy beats, and catchy harmonies that proved a winning formular and propelled the group to sales of more than 12 million copies over a five album run for Atlantic." And lingering somewhere among a slew of guests? Rivers Cuomo of Weezer.
"Back in 2003, the writing was on the wall for bands like us," McGrath told Billboard. "Radio was changing, music was doing what it does, it was just going through a cycle. We weren't selling a lot of records and we were like 'You know, maybe we should take a break from the grind of recording and touring and see what else is out there.'"
McGrath left his host gig at Extra last September so he could focus on the band. As he sees it, "We have realistic views of how the music industry is today. I know people aren't sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for a Sugar Ray record. But that wasn't the point. It was purely because we love to make music. We're not going anywhere."
To emphasize his point, Sugar Ray have lined up a number of new tour dates, running between a July 24 stop in Hankinson, ND, and a September 26 show in San Diego.
