Summit to Hire Eclipse Director

Despite widely published reports that Drew Barrymore was being considered to direct Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise, rumor has it that Summit has hired Spanish helmer Juan Antonio Bayona for the coveted gig and is expected to make the official announcement shortly. Bayona is the protege of Guillermo del Toro and directed The Orphanage, a Spanish-language thriller that garnered him plenty of critical accolades. The hiring of Bayona marks what is expected to be an aesthetic shift for the franchise, given the director's previous work.
Bayona is also attached to direct Hater, a thriller for Universal. Del Toro will produce that film, as he did The Orphanage. Bayona marks the third of three different directors for each film in Summit's cornerstone franchise. Catherine Hardwicke directed the first film, which holds the record for biggest first weekend take by a female director, while Chris Weitz is set to start shooting New Moon shortly. Melissa Rosenberg penned the first two scripts and is currently working on the pivotal Eclipse script, where heroine Bella makes her choice between the vampire Edward and the wolf Jacob.
