Surfer Blood guitarist Thomas Fekete died Monday. The cause of death was a rare form of cancer. Following Fekete's diagnosis last year, Fekete was forced to part ways with his band to focus on his treatment. He and his wife made the news public in hopes to raise money for his medical bills. In November, Real Estate, Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices, Yoko Ono, Interpol, Cults and other artists helped cover the costs of Fekete's treatment by selling unreleased songs, Pitchfork reports. Fekete's wife shared the news of the musician's passing through the GoFundMe page established to assist with medical expenses. "I am full of comfort knowing that he is now free, and long for the day I get to be with him again," she wrote.
"I plan to host a celebration of his life here on the beach in South Florida, the first weekend of July, just after his birthday on 1st. I will share specific details as soon as possible. I invite anyone who holds Thomas in their hearts to please join me in celebrating him."
"Thomas John Fekete, I love you and live for you. Nothing will make me more proud than being able to call myself your wife."
"Now, my beautiful angel, go find Bowie and jam."
Fekete's band have responded to the loss of their co-founding member on Twitter.

Surfer Blood formed in 2009 in Miami. The band's career took off soon after forming. In 2010 they released their debut album, Astro Coast; containing the breakout single, "Swim," the album along with a constant touring presence quickly established Surfer Blood as one of contemporary indie rock's foremost nineties revivalists, earning glowing comparisons to early Weezer. Fekete's talent for sugar-spiked hooks certainly made-up a huge part of the band's appeal. The group followed the success of their debut album releasing Tarot Classics EP in 2011; sophomore album Pythons in 2013; and 1000 Palms in 2015
