On March 17th at South by Southwest (SXSW), music lovers will have the opportunity to attend ContraBanned: #MusicUnites, a showcase featuring artists impacted by Donald Trump's immigration ban. The concert will feature Iranian vocalist Mamak Khadem, Iranian producer Ash Koosha, and Somali duo Faarrow. The show will take place at the Palm Door on Sixth in Austin, Texas.
The showcase was put together by Tamizdat — a nonprofit organization that helps musicians facing visa issues — along with globalFest and BBC-affiliated radio program "PRI's The World". ContraBanned is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to cover the costs of flying and housing the artists.
The immigration ban is currently suspended in the court system. After Trump initially signed the executive order, numerous artists including Rihanna, Arcade Fire's Win Butler, and Bruce Springsteen reacted against the ban. Grimes and Sia each started charity campaigns to help those impacted by the ban.
SXSW begins March 10th and goes through March 19th. The music festival portion of the event begins March 13th and continues through the final day. The festival began back in 1987, which means this year will celebrate its 30th anniversary — of parties, performances, panels and madness.
