Sylvan Esso are about to release their sophomore album What Now. It's an appropriate title for the record from the duo made up of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn who found themselves taken aback by the success of their debut self-titled record. But with success comes expectations that can be daunting.
"Putting out a record kind of feels like asking the world out on a date," explains Meath. "You figure out all the really cute things you can do to get their attention, but then eventually you're like no, this is me, here I am." Meath still finds herself in awe of the project and as birds chirped in the background, she says, "Every time I write a song it feels like some kind of miracle has happened."
Her and Sanborn's previous projects found them mostly working in the folk genre, which may have you wondering just how they developed into a show stealing act on many of the world's largest pop festivals. But it isn't that complicated for Meath, "I like that people think that when you are a musician you only get one specific genre tool kit, and that the pop tool kit is very far away from folk music. And it's the exact same thing. It's just music making, which is one of the loveliest things in the whole world."
