We've talked to Alex Da Kid before. He signed Imagine Dragons, he works with Skylar Grey and he produced songs on the new Eminem album, so yeah. Those are the reasons why he has an open invite here! He also has his own imprint KIDinaKORNER via Interscope.
Can you talk about some of your contributions to The Marshall Mathers LP 2? Do you work directly with Eminem or is everything done remotely, thanks to the digital day and age we live in? Can you give us an inside scoop?
When Marshall first started to work on MMLP2, we discussed his vision for the album and where he wanted to go creatively. Then I went to work making beats and hooks that I thought would align with this vision and take it to the next level. Every few months or so, we would reconvene and he would pick the tracks he liked and write to them. Sometimes we would redefine the initial idea, but most of the time it stayed pretty true to the demo.
I produced three tracks off the album: 'A**hole' feat. Skylar Grey; 'Wicked Ways' feat. X Ambassadors; and 'Desperation' feat. Jamie N Commons. All of those tracks featured artists who are actually signed to my label KIDinaKORNER, so those collaborations were extra special for me.
Okay, so Imagine Dragons. Whoa! They blew up! What was it about them that attracted you to work with them and sign them? Rock bands are really tricky these days, but these guys totally exploded. What do you think is so special about them? It took a minute to break them, so what was that process like?
I was immediately impressed with the band's songwriting and musical consistency after listening to their first three EPs; when I finally met them in the studio, we just instantly clicked. That coupled with their amazing live show and great work ethic -- I knew they were something special. As far as breaking them, we were just patient and worked through the process of exposing their music via different platforms and radio formats and then releasing it inexpensively in the form of EPs. Really just making the main focus the music and exposing them to an extremely wide audience helped enable their fan base to grow steadily.
What other new or developing acts do you have cooking on your imprint?
There's new stuff from X Ambassadors, Skylar Grey, Candice Pillay and Jamie N Commons coming soon - so stay tuned!
Can we talk Skylar Grey? She is in a grey zone, no pun. She had the goth thing going, then shelved the album, then released it and it sorta stuttered. She has SUCH a great voice... can you talk a little about working with her?
Skylar's great. She's the first artist I signed to KIDinaKORNER, even though we had worked a lot together before then. Her music is interesting and affecting, she has a great voice and she puts on a great live show. And similar to Imagine Dragons, we had instant chemistry when we got in the studio. She's very talented.
We ask everyone this -- any non-music skills, hobbies or talents? You have to have something else you do besides work with artists, right?
I'm a very multidimensional man: I build houses, I play soccer and I go to strip clubs. [LOL]
What's your favorite thing about Alex da Kid? We love everything, pretty much!
