Take Aim: Amy Sciarretto Vs. Author Chris Illuminati
Mon, 18 Jun 2012 16:06:26
Amy Sciarretto is a writer and a rioter. So naturally, she wanted to engage in a little Take Aim Q+A with author and fellow writer Chris Illuminati. Yes, that's his real name. [Insert Michael Bolton eye roll from Office Space here!] Mr. Illuminati released his new book Thank You For Not Laughing, which is notes from his writer's journal. We read it and loved it. So we knew we had to get him in the ring for this chat.
Illuminati? How many times a day do you get asked if that is your "real" name? And really, are Jay-Z and Beyoncé part of the Illuminati? Since you would know, being that you have the same last name as that organization!
Not joking, at least ten times a day. Just the other day, while getting a blood test, the nurse asked if I knew what the name meant and I replied, "I've got nothing to do with any organization." She laughed and said "They are the Anti-Christ" and got a little angry just discussing the name. Not the attitude you want the person about to stick you for blood to show. On a related note, Jay-Z is actually my cousin on my mom's side. Her maiden name was Z.
Thank You for Not Laughing is your published writing journal. How did you sift through and decide what to publish and what NOT to publish?
It's was a simple process actually — I wrote everything in an actual journal. Pen to paper. After the journal was filled, I went back and reread what I wrote and if it made me laugh it was included in the book. Much like every other writer or artist, I think most of my stuff stinks, so if it was able to make me laugh it must have been decent.
Will V.2 feature what you did NOT publish on the first round?
If version one does well, I'd be more than happy to put out a follow-up. The other stuff needs a lot of work. I wrote down some pretty disturbing things. Anything else ends up on my website. (thankyoufornotlaughing.com)
If you were not a writer, you would be...
Miserable. Honestly, I'd be miserable, because I was miserable before I became a paid writer. I'd be stuck in some awful job and drinking White-Out until 5PM. Which is what I did before all this happened.
Any other talents/hobbies/hidden skills besides writing?
I'm sure I have some talents or skills that I wouldn't classify as anything to brag about but the hobby thing really bothers me and it always has because I don't have a hobby. I've never had a hobby. It's alarms me that I don't have a hobby. People collect things, create things and have these amazing activities that fill their spare time and I've got nothing. I'm good at avoid more work, which is all a hobby really is — additional work. Maybe my hobby is never getting a hobby.
