Ben Ottewell of Gomez has released his new solo album, Rattlebag, which you can nab at iTunes.

He settled in for a fun, fireside Take Aim chat.

Twitter-size your bio -- your choice of 140 words or characters, if you want to get technical-- and tell us everything we need to know! GO!

Born in the hills, always singing, playing guitar. Join band, band become big deal, makes lots of music, plays lots of shows. Go solo, always singing, playing guitar.

If you were not doing music, you would be...

A professor of sociology or some other badass academic work.

Any non-music hobbies, talents or skills?

I cook a mean chili. Can read without mouthing the words.

Pick ONE song on your record and share a writing or recording story. Something intimate, that you haven't told anyone else (or at least a bunch of writers or journalists) and that which puts us in the moment with you. Let's get intimate, shall we?

The recording was fairly uneventful, which was a blessing considering we had five days to do it, apart from an above average consumption of Mexican things: beer, coke (the drink) and food. The recording of 'Distant Shores' was fairly amusing. We drafted in Ian from my band Gomez on drums, which worked surprisingly well, and Joe Purdy on guitar and BVs, as we did the whole thing live. As it was the last day, we cracked a bottle of fine whisky and set to it; the only thing we didn't plan for was Joe's drinking problem. Not in an AA sense; he's totally steady. He just kept knocking his drink over, probably five times; the place smelled like a Tom Waits record. Very authentic.

Finish this sentence: Ben Ottewell is the artist that...

...gets paid for shouting at people.

Bonus Question: What creative urge does doing solo music satisfy that being in a band doesn't, for you, as a songwriter/musician?

It broadens the scope, there are five of us in the band, album every couple of years, 12 songs a record, everybody has their own idea how it should sound. Solo, I'm the boss, it allows me to explore different things.

Will you check out his latest and greatest? Here's the title track, "Rattlebag" - enjoy!

    —Amy Sciarretto
