Take Aim: Amy Sciarretto vs. Breaking Laces Willem Hartong
Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:02:57
Amy Sciarretto nabbed Breaking Laces' Willem Hartong for a Take Aim chat. The pinball lover was game for any and all questions about his band's album Come Get Some.
Pick one song on Come Get Some and share a writing or recording story -- something we'd only know because you told us!
"Be a Hammer" was a guitar riff that had been hanging out for a long time without a story to fill it out. After I brought it in to the other guys, we tried to tinker with it and even put together two songs around it that in the end didn't do the music justice. It was horribly frustrating because I knew there was magic in that song. After a year or so I read a book called Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and realized that Louie Zamperini's story might make a good match for the tune. Plus I felt a tug to try and pay homage to such a courageous and resilient person. So "Be a Hammer" ended up being a pep talk to fellow prisoners in a WWII Japanese P.O.W. Camp.
Any non-musical skills or hobbies?
I'm really good at pinball and love to play. I've even subbed in a competitive pinball league in the East Village on occasion. If I had a Zen like activity, it would be that Pinball reminds me that no matter how hard you work or how well you do, you can always use a lucky break.
If you were not doing music, you'd be...
A writer of some sort. Or if I couldn't swing that, I believe I could be happy working in publishing. No f#$%ing way I'm working in the music business, unless I'm making the music.
Twitter bio time: 140 words or characters (your choice) of what we need to know about Breaking Laces. We are sensitivity with a sense of humor. Hard work with a laid back vibe. Three bodies, six hands giving all they got to make the biggest and best music they can.
This is your fourth album - some bands don't get to their second album! What keeps this fresh + exciting for you?
Playing live and touring never gets old. It's always an adventure and we treat it as such. Plus there was the promise that one day we would make an album as good as Come Get Some And now there is the promise that next time out we will do something even better.
Are you going to check out Breaking Laces?
