Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning, a Canadian, has just dropped his second solo album You Gots 2 Chill. That's why we've invited him to Take Aim. He's indie rock royalty, so we changed the questions a bit out of respect. He revealed he can cook and makes a mean voicemail demo. Wait, what? Oh, read on to find out what we mean.

This is your second solo effort -- what's different than the first, in terms of how it satisfies you as an artist.

It's different compared to the first since Broken Social Scene was an ongoing concern. With this record, I started while Broken Social Scene was still a touring entity. We cooled our jets on BSS and decided to try different things, so in that regard, it's different. Every song starts with acoustic guitar. Acoustic guitar is something I play an awful lot at home here. I've collected a lot of guitar licks over the years, some of them recorded on my answering machine, where I'd be calling and leaving a message or voicemail for myself. That's the good thing about voicemail -- it's packed with future songs.

Any non-music hobbies, talents or skills?

I'm a soccer player. I am still actively doing that. I'll miss my Thursday game because I am in Chicago. [Editor's Note: We did this interview a few weeks ago!]] Rock 'n' roll has to come first. But if I could play professional soccer, I would. I was never quite good enough.

Soccer –or football, as they say in Europe, has never caught on in the U.S. on the pro level. Why do you think that is?

You can't get 40,000 people to Houston and Los Angeles. It's definitely rooted in Europe and the U.K. It's never in the roots here. In the '70s, it had a good run and the New York Cosmos. It's there, it's always there. It' just not going to displace NFL Sundays or the World Series. And here in Canada, it won't topple over hockey. Oh, and I like to cook.

    Savory or sweet dishes?

Savory. I'm not a baker. I have no signature dish, but I can make you a piece of salmon or lasagna or squash soup, I can handle that. Or spaghetti bolognese.

Our mouths are watering. So, how do chill when you gots 2?

Whether cooking or playing soccer or putting on music, and hanging with my dog. I have a Chihuaha mutt. Sitting on my front stoop in the summer and playing guitar, that's where guitar creations get birthed.

Pick ONE song on your record and share a writing or recording story. Something intimate, that you haven't told anyone else (or at least a bunch of writers or journalists) and that which puts us in the moment with you. Let's get intimate, shall we?

'Lighthouse Return' is the actual title, and it was left on my phone and voicemail in 2006. Fast-forward six years later, I thought I should do something with it. 'Once a Lighthouse' was the name of answering machine demo.

It seems like you make a mean piece of salmon and a mean answering machine demo so you don't lose riffs you come up with you and you keep things if they don't work at first or don't know what to do! Is that the case with "Lighthouse?"

I didn't have the outlet for it yet.

Finish this sentence: Brendan Canning is the artist that...

...that will take you into outer space if you let him.

Will you Chill with Brendan Canning?
