Daniel Powter Videos
Daniel Powter is a musician and a father. He's also a wannabe surfer who admits he sucks at it. We love his candor. LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Powter also wanted to race Formula 1 cars when he was younger, but he drives like shit, admittedly.
We love a talented artist who admits their flaws, since we all have flaws and that's what makes us interesting. One area where Powter has no flaws? Making music, of course!
All of those things combined make him a very interesting subject for a Take Aim. If he can handle kids and music, he could handle our resident questioner Amy Sciarretto as she lobbed five (somewhat) easy questions at him.
Powter's Turn On the Lights is out now!
Ready, set, go!
If you were not doing music, you would be...?
I always wanted to race Formula 1 when I was younger. I'm completely obsessed with race cars. Unfortunately, I am a terrible driver. My insurance costs me a fortune after racking up so many speeding tickets. However, I do occasionally drive my sports car and pretend I'm Senna.
Pick one song on Turn On the Lights and share a writing or recording story. Put us in the moment with you - funny or serious. Tell us something we would not know about the song unless you told us.
I wrote "Come Back Home" after I spent a day on the USS Aschcroft in San Diego. I was so inspired by the crew and got to listen to their stories as we dove down and practiced missions in the Pacific Ocean. Six months at sea with no family!!
"Come Back Home" is dedicated to the men and women in our military. It's a song about how important it is to come home to your family.
Any non-music skills/talents/hobbies?
Well... I've lived in LA for 10 years now and I always wanted to learn how to surf. So about two years ago, I got a beautiful long board for my birthday. I love being out there even though I'm terrible at it. Even just sitting out there waiting for a set to come in and meeting great people that don't know who I am and don't care. Surfers are cool like that.
How is life as a transplanted Canadian in L.A. with two kids and life as a musician treating you? Is it a juggling act? What do your kids think of your music? Do they inspire it?
I love L.A.!!! And I am proud to be Canadian! I don't get hassled too much about my Canadian accent anymore because after 10 years it's almost gone. I am living my dream. I spend as much time as I can with my two daughters. If I'm not working, I'm with them going to the beach, pony lessons, hip-hop dance class or driving them to school.
I LOVE being a Dad!!! My daughter Sophie has been encouraging me to return to the music scene for almost two years now. Sophie and I sometimes play piano together and those moments are about the most inspiring moments I've ever had! There are no awards on my shelves and all the platinum records are in boxes in the garage. I've made sure my kids will always just see me as plain old dad.
Billie is only 4 months old now. I brought her to England last week with me. Nothing like rockin' out at BBC Radio and then going back to the hotel and changing her diapers! Humility is the key to success.
Twitter-bio time! 140 words on EVERYTHING you feel we need to know about Daniel Powter?
That's a tough question.. I don't know that there is really much you need to know about me other than I hope I've grown up a bit since "Bad Day"... But not too much.
Daniel Powter - an awesome musician and an even cooler dad, along with wannabe surfer!
Did you check out Turn on the Lights yet?
