Take Aim: Amy Sciarretto vs. Dir En Grey's Kaoru
Wed, 30 Oct 2013 16:10:15
Japanese rockers Dir En Grey took to Skype with a translator to engage in a Take Aim in advance of their upcoming U.S. tour -- their first time on U.S. soil in years! Guitarist Kaoru was gracious in offering a taste and a hint of the future, both recorded and live! We switched out the typical Take Aim questions due to the language barrier and the result was just as compelling as if we had asked our typical smart-ass fare!
Dir En Grey fans are dedicated in their obsessiveness -- where does it come from?
Actually, we really have no idea why it is so, but we can say that we put effort and heart into our shows, trying to make every single show as important and for the fans. Perhaps that is what the fans see from us. Hopefully, that's what they get.
Why is the American market important for the band?
Five years ago, Japanese music was starting to get popular in America, so we got on the wave of the whole Japanese music boom. Playing overseas and in America, we felt the response from the fans and we continued to work in America because it feels like there are people interested in the music.
Touring in America -- what do you bring that reminds you of Japan.
I don't bring anything, but I lick soy sauce to remind myself of home. [Laughs]
New music -- what's the status?
A new single is coming, which will be in stores in January. That's done. We have four or five songs we are working on and have taken shape for the new album. Up until now, the music has been complex. This album will be more straightforward representing Dir En Grey as a band. It's something fans can look forward to. We will be touring in America, a couple of shows in Japan and then get into the studio in January and February to work on remaining songs.
What are some American bands that you are into or influenced by?
I am not familiar with a lot of current bands, but the most interesting thing he saw was a live recording of Nine Inch Nails concert at Fuji Rock in Japan.
Will you play new music on tour?
We are not able to play anything new from upcoming album just yet, but prepared a couple songs we have not played in America yet, from the older catalog.
Can you describe the music to someone who has never heard?
It's difficult to categorize or explain what we are. But I feel that the appeal is on the live show and the concert, where it's very raw.
Anything else you want to say?
It has been a while since we set foot in America, and we want to show fans something different production-wise, so it will be a new experience. We are as excited to meet the fans as they are excited to see us.
