Take Aim: Amy Sciarretto Vs. A Great Big World

ARTISTdirect.com's Amy Sciarretto invited the duo A Great Big World into the ring for a Great Big Take Aim. They even let us premiere their airy rock song "I Really Want It" in conjunction with the Q+A. Lucky us. Lucky YOU, actually.
The song is roller coaster rock, since it goes up and down, and is fun and makes you think "Weeeeee!"
We nabbed time with Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino who comprise Great Big World.
If you were not doing music, you'd be...
Ian: An astronaut!
Chad: An alternative medicine doctor
Any non-musical skills/hobbies/talents?
Ian: UFO-watching. I also like to exercise when I can, and I dabble in yoga and meditation. I love to eat good, healthy food. If only I could cook...
Chad: I get hired to do a lot of voice-overs that sound like a stereotypical college guy. Usually it's the overachiever that everybody hates in college.
What was the impetus for doing this EP/project?
Ian: Our prior album was released under my name "Ian Axel." While Chad wrote on most of the songs, he was only a featured vocalist on one track, "This Is the New Year." Naturally we began to inspire each other and write more and more for both of our voices. And as Chad became more of an artist and less of a "behind-the-scenes" guy, the name Ian Axel no longer made sense. We wanted a name that would celebrate life and our interconnectedness. A Great Big World does that for us.
Pick one song from your EP and share a writing or recording story. Something you've not shared ad infinitum already, and that we'd only know since you told us!
Chad: We were going through such a rough patch the year before we wrote "You'll Be Okay." Both Ian and I had day jobs that we hated and we both had our hearts broken at the same time. We were also so unhappy with our living situation (I lived on an air mattress in the kitchen of our bed-bug infested apartment, and at one point Ian lived on the couch in the kitchen of that same apartment). And we couldn't see much hope for where music was going to take us in the immediate future. After about a year of this, we wrote "You'll Be Okay." It truly felt like we were coming out of one of the darkest periods in both our lives, and it still serves as a self-spoken reminder to the both of us that we always have so much to appreciate.
Twitter-sized bio: 140 words or characters - your choice- of EVERYTHING we need to know. Go!
