Javier Dunn will release Trails on June 25, but we got to him early. The butter smooth singer, who's a little R&B and a little pop, was a ready and willing opponent in the Take Aim ring.
Whatta ya need to know about Javier? Well, he spent the last eight years as Sara Bareilles' touring guitar player. They met when Sara was an unknown singer-songwriter in the Hotel Cafe scene in L.A. Javier also co-wrote the song "Love on the Rocks" off of Bareilles' platinum selling Little Voice. In between tours, he produced, recorded and distributed four EPs two singles and one full album.
Up until this record, Dunn focused on acoustic music. Trails is the first album that incorporates synths, beats and hip-hop elements. He fused the organic and the technological and there's nothing wrong with that.
With influences as far and wide as Kanye West and Bob Dylan, Dunn explored all facets of inspiration on this record. He actually came across the latest version on Garage Band last year and was impressed by the sounds the program was capable of. His goal was to make an album with electronic elements that retains the authenticity of his singer-songwriter roots.
All of these things combined made us feel the need to chat with Dunn. And without further pause…
If you were not doing music, you would be...
If I was not doing music, I'd be... a shell of a human. It's not really even a choice at this point. Music is who I am and what I do. Buuuut, for the sake of answering the question, I'd be a painter. Or a sculptor. I just love making things that only exist in my brain. Art. I'd be an artist. Or maybe run a fly fishing lodge in Missoula, Montana!
Any non-music hobbies, skills or talents?
I've been getting into painting. I play tennis and I love fly fishing --nerd alert. I also love traveling. Moving. New faces and places. God, this is starting to sound like a match.com profile.
Twitter-size your bio: 140 words (or characters) or ALL wee need to know about you! GO!
I play instruments and I write songs and I perform them live, all in some subconscious effort to connect with the world around me, and hopefully connect others too.
Pick one of your songs and share a writing or recording story.
"Couple of Drinks." The chorus and theme came to me as I floated on a friends pool at a 4th of July party. We're all little kids when it gets right down to it, hoping someone likes us and hoping we like them back. Crushes and heartbreak. Playground stuff. But now there's alcohol involved!
Best memory of working with Sara Bareilles?
Playing "Oh Darling," just her and I, in Abbey Road Studios, Studio 2, The Beatles room... I was playing a John Lennon epiphone casino reissue, and I stared at those walls and ceiling and felt connected to history. That song, that guitar, that room, and with my best friend Sara Bareilles: I will never forget that day.
Will you check Javier Dunn? You should!
