Take Aim: Amy Sciarretto vs. Jon Secada
Thu, 08 Nov 2012 15:55:03
Jon Secada had a huge hit in the '90s with "Just Another Day." He is back with a new single, "I'm Never Too Far Away." We loved him then and we love him now, so we invited him to join the illustrious ranks of the Take Aim column. While we send digital property value plummeting, he provided the lift we need! He talks staying shape, his new single, the 20th anniversary of "Just Another Day" and more!
If you were not a musician, you would be…
That's a really tough question for me because, out of high school, the only thing that interested me was music....and I went to college and got my Bachelor's and my Master's degrees, not with the vision of being famous or anything, but for the purpose of learning, then working the art I love. In another life, I would have loved to have played baseball, though... In another life...
Do you have any non-musical talents/skills/hobbies?
I really don't have any set hobbies, talents or skills besides my career. My family being first and my music second. The one thing that I am committed to is staying in shape. Specifically, over the last five years, I've adopted a pretty disciplined doctrine for staying in shape that includes weight training, cardiovascular activity and nutrition.
Can you share a writing or recording or even lyrical story about "I'm Never Too Far Away," something we'd only know because you told us, something intimate and colorful?
In the 20 years, I've been a recording artist, I can count in one hand the songs I've released as singles, that I have not participated as a writer on. "I'm Never Too Far Away" is now a part of that short list.. As a singer songwriter, recognizing what I feel is a good song, means a lot to me. I'll never forget when the producer, as well as one of the writers of that song, Rudy Perez, played me the track for the first time. I immediately heard what could potentially be a smash hit of a song....and from the moment I put my voice on the track I knew "I'm Never Too Far Away" had to be the first single of my new project.
It's the 20th anniversary of "Just Another Day!" Wow! What's your favorite memory from that era/time?
My favorite memory from that time when "Just Another Day" was released, was the day me and my friend and co-writer Miguel Morejon wrote that song...I remember it as if it was yesterday...within an hour we had the main parts of the song worked out including the chorus, and when we were done we looked at each other, smiled and called it a day...it ended up that was the first song we wrote for that record, and my first hit single...
Can you catch us up – what's new and exciting with you in the past few years?
In the past few years I've ventured into the areas of theater and television alongside my music career. I've starred in three musicals.. Two on Broadway: Grease and Cabaret, and a national tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. For four years I was a judge in Latin American Idol"(the Spanish version of American Idol.) It was the only international branch of the franchise. I'm currently involved as a television figure in Latin America, while promoting my new single "I'm Never Too Far Away", and making time in the recording studio to complete the rest of the English project, as well as preparing what will be my next Spanish project as well. I'll be working both projects with my producer Rudy Perez.
