Tampa singer-songwriter Matt Hires has released his Forever EP ahead of his next album This World Won't Last Forever But Tonight We Can Pretend. He specializes in a folk-pop hybrid. He was flying from Chicago to Dayton when he carved some time out of his busy schedule to chat with ARTIStdirect.com's Amy Sciarretto in the space of this Take Aim.
Pick one song on your Forever EP [iTunes link] and put us in the moment. Share a writing or recording story.
"Ruthless Heart" is a song I wrote. It was the first time I had met Alex Deven, who I wrote it with. We had all these mutual friends. We wrote it in one day. He lives in Los Angeles. We wrote it in a 10-hour writing session. I got to L.A. the next week, and we wrote three songs in two days, and hit it off.
The album title is poetic and whimsical? Were you going for that, since "forever" is in both titles?
Yes. I called the EP Forever after I named the album. It's four songs from the record, so it's a piece of the title from the album for the EP. The title of the album comes from the lyrics from "Dead Stars." I was trying to find something that felt right. I have to live with it for the rest of my life. I was listening to the lyrics and it stuck out.
Any non-musical skills, hobbies or talents?
I'm pretty good at video games and darts, which relates to music, since I got good at darts through touring and playing in bars. So it's cool.
If you weren't doing music, you would be...
Well, before I started doing music full time, I worked at a cabinet shop, building cabinets and stuff. Not sure I want to do it, but I could do it. If I had the choice, I would want to be an astrophysicist. That stuff is interesting to me.
Do you read about it?
I am reading A Brief History of Time right now, which I love. When you get deep in mathematics, it gives over my head. But I like the science stuff. I am nerdy in that way.
Any famous last words?
The song "When I Was Young" on the album is the best thing I've ever written. It's an autobiography. It's not on the EP but it is on the full-length.
Born in Orlando, Florida and lived in Tampa ever since. What's your favorite thing about Florida?
It's a beautiful state, not in ways people think. If you get into rural areas and it's beautiful. It's nice being close to beaches. When I was in high school, there were good bands.
