O' Brother lead singer Tanner Merrit was game to submit to a five-question, rapid fire interrogation courtesy of ARTISTdirect.com News Editress Amy Sciarretto in this installment of Take Aim. Ready, aim, fire!
You've listed Mogwai, Deftones, Isis, Earth, Converge, Blonde Redhead, Oceansize, Clint Mansell, Torche, Radiohead and Sigur Rós as influences on The Garden Window. If you could only listen to one of these bands for the rest of your life, which would it be? And if you say you can't answer it, you forfeit the rest of the interview.
Definitely Radiohead. It doesn't hurt that they have one of the larger catalogs of these bands, among that being a few of my favorite albums.
Pick one song on The Garden Window and give us an inside look at it – recording, writing, etc. Any cool events that took place while this song was being created?
The final song on the record "Last Breath" was one of those songs that really came together while recording. I had parts of it that I had been working on for a couple of years and never really settled on a song structure. During tracking, we recorded and scrapped entire sections of the song several times. We did a lot of experimenting with soundscapes on this one. One cool thing that happened was we found out we could create this nice underlying ambient note by feeding back a bass guitar through studio monitors. It really changed the vibe of the whole song.
Any non-music hobbies or skills?
I like cooking! That's about it...
Tell us what O'Brother are about, Twitter-sized. 140 words or less! We know, it's hard!
O'Brother is just a group of dudes who love writing music together, performing music together, traveling together, and meeting awesome people.
Finish this sentence: If I wasn't making music, I'd be...
Deaf most likely.
Are you going to check out O'Brother?
