I am a 'mixologist' and regular contributor to the cocktail program at a Michelin Star-rated gastropub/whiskey bar/hotel called Longman and Eagle located in Chicago. I'm also the coach of my sons' flag football team.
Pick ONE song one your record and share a writing or recording story. Something intimate, that you haven't told anyone else (or at least a bunch of writers or journalists) and that which puts us in the moment with you. Let's get intimate, shall we?
'God Only Knows,' the last song on the record, went through several versions before arriving at its final state. The earlier incarnations were just stale and rote sounding; there was no urgency. Nothing spoke to me about what the song was supposed to be about, which is how it usually happens for me. I'll know what the theme is lyrically after the music speaks to me for a while. but nothing happened.
We liked the arrangement and tones. But it was so flaccid sounding to me that I was literally just floundering on it. Then I started to reference some of my old loves. like the first Smashing Pumpkins record called Gish. 'Window Pane' was the song that told me how this should be presented; high on dynamics and intimacy and then unleash all hell. So we used that template to kind of start over with the arrangement and instrumentation. After it's rebirth that way, the lyrics and melody just flowed right out without hesitation. It was so clear.
Finish this sentence: The Life and Times is the artist that…
...prefers cheap domestic beers, enjoys time with each other traveling in the van, and is always trying to push forward in the hopes of blowing somebody's mind right out of this world.
Will you rock with The Life and Times?
