Amy Sciarretto squared off against Wallpaper.'s Ricky Reed to get the scoop, the whole scoop and nothing but the scoop on the new album Ricky Reed is Real. We know, we want to eat ice cream now, after all that scoop talk. But wait. Read this interview and then go grab a cone! The alt-pop Wallpaper. is too awesome to snooze on. The new album is music for Monday afternoons, Wednesday nights and beyond. Find out how and why.
Twitter-size your bio. What do we need to know? 140 words or less. GO!
Wallpaper. is loud and fun, both musically and idealistically. We make pop music for the 99 percent.
So, it's super accessible?
Yes, it's real music for real people.
Pick one song on your record and share a story.
In 2006, I played a show with an old punk band in a small bar in Fairfax, Virginia. There were eight or nine people. Three people came up to me to say they loved the band and were big fans. I didn't think much of it. A few years ago, I played a show in New York and one of those same kids came to the show and said, "My friend writing songs in L.A. You should meet him." A year later, the same kid came to my show and said, "My friend Ammar Malik [Malik] is writing songs. He wrote 'Moves Like Jagger.' We get together and go to the roof of his beach house, with acoustic guitars, and wrote a song together. It's called "Drunken Hearts." It has to do with serendipity and circumstance and leaving things to chance.
Do you have any non-musical skills, hobbies or talents?
I make a mean French toast.
What makes it so good or, well, mean?
Love. L-O-V-E. Before I started playing music, I thought I was going to be in the NBA. I have a decent outside shot and am a ball handler. A shooting guard, if you want to get technical.
If you were not doing music, you would be...
I would probably be dead. The thing I like most about music that's non-musical is that it brings me into experiences with interesting and strange people. I get myself into bizarre circumstances. I would be wandering, living the dream.
Any famous last words?
At lot of people know Wallpaper. as party music, for doing Friday night and Saturday night records, but this record has Sunday morning and Monday morning songs and Wednesday happy hour songs. It comes out on July 23, which is my birthday and my late manager's birthday, so we decided to release on his birthday.
