The song, in my opinion, would easily have to be 'New Light,' which was the first serious, full song Lincoln and I had written. For me personally, it seems to have connected a few pivotal dots through our interesting journey thus far.
We started writing it the summer after graduating high school in 2008 and continued to work on it through e-mail, while Lincoln attended college. As we were working on the song, I think we both had that unspoken, 'a-ha' moment where we both realized that maybe we might have stumbled upon something good enough to take more seriously than our previous endeavors. After recording a demo version with Lincoln doing his vocals while at school inside of his '93 Acura Legend using his built-in, internal laptop microphone in garage band, Lincoln's older brother had known Ethan as a musician/producer through the Dallas music scene and decided to send him our demo. Upon listening, Ethan deemed it awesome enough to want to work with us and soon after joined the band, then playing guitar instead of bass, to get a live band started. Following the first recording of 'New Light' in January 2009, we eventually ended up with enough material for a full album sometime 2011. Two years later, we are fortunate enough to land a record deal with Old Friends (Fearless).
In December 2013, the label decides to send us back into the studio with Ethan at his new California residence to revamp the album and record one new song ('Chasin' Honey'). While working on some finishing vocal touches, Chris Foitle, the one who signed us and the newly appointed president of Fearless, came by the studio to hang out and hear how everything had been coming along. Lucky for him, he had showed up just in time to help record a vocal chant for an updated down-chorus in 'New Light.' Despite his initial opposition, we had convinced him to join the party and sing along. He did end up making the album and at that moment, everything seemed to have come full circle from where we had humbly began....
