Italian music icon Zucchero "Sugar" Fornaciari will be presented with the L.A. Italia Excellence Award at the 2013 Los Angeles, Italia – Film, Fashion and Art Fest, which runs through February 23.
On February 21, he will receive his well-deserved honor at the Grammy museum in L.A. Congrats!
Previous recipients of the L.A. Italia Excellence Award have included Ennio Morricone, Andrea Bocelli and Vasco Rossi. He is in good company and with good reason. He is on the level of those same artists, representing Italian music. Italians should be proud of his artistic contributions to their culture.
We interviewed him to discuss this major accolade and honor and so he could illuminate us (and you) about the beautiful music that comes Italy.
Congrats on your honor! How does it feel?
It is a big pleasure to receive this award, more than that it is an honour and a very big surprise. It makes me feel very humble to be honored in this way and I am really looking forward to come to Los Angeles and see my American friends again. I have been there many times over the years and always I have been welcomed with great warmth and this time, I am happy to be able to thank everybody who has supported me in receiving this honour.
What is the one thing you'd like our readers, who are largely American, to know about your music + Italian music in general?
I've always been inspired by blues and soul music and of course the birth of that was really in America. I also like to be contaminated of different kinds of music wherever I go, for me music speaks of the emotions and feelings of the country it comes from and when I'm traveling I like to meet new musicians, I like to listen to new music and take the flavor and the inspiration from the places I visit. My music is what and who I am, when I cry the music cries but also when I party so does my music!
If you were not doing music, you would be...
A vet! It's true and I did study for this at university and took exams. The problem was that music kept interrupting my learning and calling me so in the end I had to follow my heart and say ciao, goodbye to any thoughts of being a vet.
Do you have any non-musical talents, hobbies or skills?
I have a farm in Tuscany, with lot of trees, pastures and animals in fact we make our own wine there. I love the space that the countryside offers me the honest earth beneath my feet and the sun and sky above. These simple things make me very happy but also I love to spend time with friends and family at home so I hope a non-musical skill is that I am a good and true friend to my friends and a good father to my children.
What is your favorite of your songs to sing and why?
My favorite song is still "Dune mosse" which was part of my album called Blues in 1987. This album achieve a very high sales level in Italy and I did a very beautiful version of "Dune mosse" with the legendary Miles Davis which was an amazing opportunity and great honour, he played like an angel. He enjoyed it so much he came out and played it live with me on tour in Italy.
Are you going to check out Zucchero's music?
