Take Me Home Tonight: The Top Ten Eighties Songs to Take You Home To

This weekend, Topher Grace and Anna Faris star in Relativity Media's Take Me Home Tonight- an eighties style teen movie that reminds us of the great eighties teen movies like The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Driving Miss Daisy. In honor of this hilarious foray into the teen angst of 1988, we’ve compiled a playlist of the top eighties songs to “take you home” to.
INXS - “I Need You Tonight”
That’s pronounced “In excess,” not to be confused as the letters “I.N.X.S.” We all know and love this classic track- hell, we sing it enough at karaoke every Thursday night to prove that fact! Nothing conveys pure desperation like a guy at a bar telling a woman, “I need you tonight because I’m not sleeping.” Still, when Michael Hutchence says it, it works.
Marvin Gaye - “Sexual Healing”
They may say laughter is the best medicine, but Marvin Gaye has a difference of opinion on this matter… IFyaknowwhatImean. Personally, I think medicine is the best medicine.
Everything slows down when you hear this song. This was the ultimate eighties prom ballad- which means it was the last song teenage guys would hear before going home alone and crying themselves to sleep.
Rick James was a funk legend. C’mon- any song that has the lyrics, “Give me the stuff- that sweet, funky stuff!” automatically makes any list I’ll ever write. So watch out for that!
This single from Like A Virgin is fun, sexy, and seductive while keeping it light. Like a glass of chardonnay! You might also remember it featured in a Gap commercial, which is the real reason it became so famous.
We all remember this iconic video with the dancing models clad in black. It’s an amazing song to boot. I had a friend who was severely addicted to love. We had to stage an intervention. Now he’s fully recovered and has since started an emo band.
This is one of those tracks that just epitomized the eighties, and everyone starts singing along as soon as that chorus comes. For a good time, call Def Leppard!
Just thinking about this song brings a tear to my eye. This song sounds like it should be sung over a cliff, with the wind blowing your hair. It was a tender moment from the decade. Actually, it’s just a really cheesy song, but it’s fun.
Whenever you have a case of the Mondays- pop this little delight on. What is better than the feeling of being in love, or the feeling that it’s Friday?
After you’ve been taken home, you’re going to have to be woken up at some point- and this is the official waking up song of the eighties! This song just makes you want to dance ridiculously. Care to join me?
Now, you are officially ready to rock out to Take Me Home Tonight. Be sure to check it out in theatres this weekend. Speaking of which- can I get a ride?
