It's not easy to stand out in the 21st century.
This is perhaps the most crowded musical climate in history. Anybody can simply record a track and post it on YouTube or Soundcloud, suddenly becoming a "musician" in the process. That's why we're constantly bombarded with an endless stream of mediocrity. However, Taylor Greenwood rises above all that on her EP, All Around Me.
There's absolutely no other artist out there quite like the young singer-songwriter. She possesses an inimitable voice that's simultaneously vulnerable and vibrant. In addition to actually tapping into real emotion lyrically, she also has a knack for an immortal hook. Songs like "All The Right Ones" shimmy from a piano swing into a theatrical crescendo that's as fascinating as it is fiery. Meanwhile, "Did You Mean" tempers her soft delivery with a propulsive build up that leads into an utterly divine chorus as she sings, "Did you mean remember this moment?"
Elsewhere, the title track begins with a guitar echo before sweeping into neo soul that'd give Norah Jones a run for her money. "Clarity" comes to life as a terse emotional rumination with intriguing instrumentation completely atypical of most modern pop. Everything comes to a powerful close on the elegantly heartbreaking "Picture of Us". It's a dynamic landscape of feelings that'll make you think and could even inspire you to pick up an instrument yourself.
The world needs Taylor Greenwood about right now, and undoubtedly, the world will be hers soon. Meet your new favorite artist and one of the best voices out there.
