Tech N9ne brought all kinds of Special Effects to his mind-blowing show at the Sunset Strip House of Blues last night. His new album, Special Effects, hits shelves May 4th via his own Strange Music, and the “#1 Independent Rapper” took label mates Krizz Kaliko and Murs as well as phenom Chris Webby and Jamaica’s ZUSE along for the ride. Flint Michigan heavy music revolutionaries King 810 rounded out a bill with a downright unforgettable set, giving a fiery ferocity punctuated by catchy catharsis. At the top of the marquee though, Tech proved why he’s one of the greatest MCs of all-time with an action-packed set worthy of the title Special Effects.

With his phenomenal drummer on top of a giant riser and a tight guitar and bass team flanking two sides of a central screen, Tech emerged in the middle ready to give the audience a wild ride. “E.B.A.H.” displayed those rapid fire bars that made the Kansas City luminary an icon, while “Industry Is Punks” and “Straight Out the Gate” delivered arena-size bombast inside the wall-to-wall packed club. Tech sounded simply monstrous never missing a line, while commanding the stage with the energy of a true rap (and rock) god. “Einstein” from Anghellic practically registered on the Richter Scale, while Krizz Kaliko brought his psychotically soulful charm and impressive vocals out for “Spaz,” “Anxiety,” “Way Out” and more remaining a true staple of Strange Music.

“We do it for the love of you,” Tech proclaimed to the screaming audiences, half male and female. The ladies could get grinding on a flawless rendition of “Fragile” from Something Else, while the fellas moshed to “Aw Yeah.” “Caribou Lou,” “Titties,” and “Areola” turned it into a full-blown party culminating on “Imma Playa.” That’s the brilliance of Tech. He can make heads spin with raw mic power on “So Dope (They Wanna),” get heavily introspective for “Am I Psycho?,” or light up a party with “Hood Go Crazy.” How many rappers are that tight? With the Eminem feature finally popping up on Special Effects and all signs pointing at a huge Billboard debut, this is Tech’s moment. The mainstream has come to him, and he still delivers with the energy of an underground leader. Now, he’s a straight up icon, and he deserves it. He ain’t stopping though…
