The Beach Boys' Mike Love received City Year's "Seven Generations Award" for his decades of investment in education and national service at the organization's 2013 National Leadership Summit on May 14. Congrats, Mike.

As one of the organization's highest honors, Mike Love was "jacketed" in City Year's signature red jacket worn by all 2,500 corps members. A national education-focused organization, City Year unites young people for a year of service in high-need schools.

"City Year promotes two things dear to my heart: service and education," said Mike Love. "The ideas, the dreams, the passion inside each and every one of us have the potential to light a spark in someone else. City Year encourages others to ignite the imagination of our greatest resource: our youth. It's a cause my wife Jacquelyne and I deeply support, and we are very touched by, and grateful for this recognition."

"The 'Seven Generations Award' is given to individuals who are committed to the idea that the actions we take today have the power to impact people over the next seven generations," said AnnMaura Connolly, Chief Strategy officer of City Year. "Mike Love has lived by that philosophy, lending his name, talent and resources to causes he believes in, especially the cause of service."

As lead singer of the international sensation, The Beach Boys, Mike Love began StarServe, "Students Taking Action and Responsibility to Serve," which enlisted high profile celebrities to inspire young people to serve their communities.

After Hurricane Katrina, Love helped the American Red Cross raise $250,000 in just one hour for families affected by the storm. Alongside The Beach Boys, Mike Love partnered with Operation Smile during their critically acclaimed 50th Anniversary tour which benefited children worldwide. He recently performed a benefit concert for The Foundation for the Children of the Californias, which raised one million dollars to support the expansion of three new surgical suites. A longtime supporter of environmental causes, Love was among speakers at the Earth Summit in Rio De Janiero and Earth Day on the Mall in Washington, D.C.
