Surviving Beastie Boys Mike D. and Ad Rock revealed they recorded music with the late Adam Yauch aka MCA before he died. They did so in the fall of last year.
"Adam instigated it," Mike D., aka Michael Diamond, said to Rolling Stone. "It could only come from him, in terms of where he was at with his cancer treatment. He wasn't sure he was able to do vocals but after a bit we ended up doing them. It was a way for him to say, 'Yeah, I'm doing it.'"
As for the future of the Beasties as a group, Mike D. said, "I can see making music. I don't know about a band format. But Yauch would genuinely want us to try whatever crazy thing we wanted but never got around to."
So the future is up in the air for the Beasties as a unit. It's really not the Beastie Boys anymore without MCA.
