EMI Music and Apple Corps Ltd. announced the first-ever worldwide CD re-mastering campaign of The Beatles’ entire catalog today. According to a joint statement, two Beatles boxed sets (one stereo with 14 discs and a DVD collection of documentaries; and one mono with 10 original mixes and two Past Masters-esque mono compilations) will be released on September 9, just in time for the group’s Rock Band game. Twelve individual albums and the Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack will be available as well. Each CD comes with expanded liner notes, rare photos and (for a limited time) a brief documentary film about the making of said album.
Four years of re-mastering at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios went into “carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analog recordings.” The first four Beatles albums have not been available in complete stereo CD mixes until now.
As for the status of the band’s ongoing digital download talks, EMI and Apple have assured us that “discussions regarding the digital distribution of the catalog will continue.”
