Frontman Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys told Interview that he and drummer Patrick Carney didn't seek success and fame and that it was never their intention to be rock stars. It sort of just…happened.
Auerbach said, "We don't have expectations or dreams, because those will always just bite you in the ass. We're very content with where we are and the speed we've been going. The only way we got through was by keeping our expectations very low. We didn't want to be rock stars."
That's a noble perspective, that's for sure. Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll are not for everyone and expectations can destroy you if they are not met. It's a crippling thing, that fame stuff.
Sometimes it really just is about the music.
Auerbach, who claimed he is not "typical frontman material," also said, "It's not about success. Whatever happens, it doesn't matter. I would like to not go bankrupt or get some incurable disease, but other than that, I'm just happy to keep going."
We looooove his refreshing 'tood.
The frontman also stated, "Some people love being onstage and really open up, and I'm sort of the opposite of that. I don't crave the spotlight. I'm still not comfortable even talking on stage."
