The Fighter is one of my favorite films in recent memory, for its winning combination of humor and heartache. Christian Bale's portrayal as the down and out, crack addicted, former "Pride of Lowell" should allow the actor to walk off with the Best Supporting Actor statue, and if there is any justice, the film will nab Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress, too. The film has double the chances to win in the latter category, as both Amy Adams and Melissa Leo received nods for their work. I predict Leo, for her portrayal of a hard-nosed, sees-what-she-wants-to-see boxing mom, will take home Oscar gold. But Adams is just as worthy for her portrayal of a tough-as-nails girlfriend.

David O. Russell's direction was magnificent; he put the viewer in the ring, on the streets of Massachusetts and in the hearts and minds of the family he chronicled.

The Oscars will be handed out on February 27th, so tune in!
