Thu, 15 Jun 2017 14:02:56
Pop, rock, hip hop, indie, this week's top new songs come from all over the music map. Over the past seven days, some of the biggest artists in the world dropped new tracks that are sure to be heard throughout the summer.
Big Boi teamed up with Troze for "Chocolate", the newest single from his highly anticipated Boomiverse. A$AP Ferg joined forced with Lil Yachty for a new track we hope appears on his upcoming album. Portugal. The Man, meanwhile, continued to grow buzz around their new release, Woodstock, with "Rich Friends".
But it wasn't only those with highly anticipated album releases turning our ears. The Killers, who just announced their first album in five years, unveiled a new track, and it's one that'll be taking over dancefloors for the rest of 2017. And that was only the beginning for a week filled with stunning new material.
Here are our favorites:
Big Boi — "Chocolate" [ft. Troze]
It has been five years since we've heard a new solo album from Big Boi. Since then he has released a collaboration with Phantogram, and rumors about an Outkast reunion have continued to spin without any new music appearing. However, it seems like over that time the rapper has been able to refocus his efforts on his own music, and has announced his third solo LP Boomiverse. So far we've loved what we've heard, and each new single has only made us crave for more. "Chocolate" is the strongest effort yet.
Portugal. The Man — "Rich Friends"
It seems like the trajectory of Portugal. The Man is continuously upward. With each album the band has managed to gain a larger following, creating more impressive music that is sharper and better crafter. Their forthcoming album Woodstock was just released today, and earlier this week they unveiled "Rich Friends". It's a pointed effort that has teeth, commenting on society's excess. With songs like this, it's no wonder why Portugal. The Man's first album in four years has everyone buzzing.
Pharrell — "Something Special"
How can you recreate the kind of success that a song like "Happy" had. It's certainly not easy, but it's a task that Pharrell seems up to — and one has accomplished time and time again. Pharrell is doubling down on that Despicable Me 2 chart topper by contributing multiple tracks to the upcoming its upcoming sequel, Despicable Me 3. "Something Special" is the second effort we've heard from the soundtrack, and it's the kind of slow jam you can expect to hear blasting from car stereos all summer long.
A$AP Ferg — "Aw Yeah" [ft. Lil Yachty]
A$AP Ferg is on a roll right now. Last week he dropped the video for "Wrong" as part of ASAP Mob, his partnership with ASAP Rocky. This week we heard multiple efforts from Ferg, but it's "Aw Yeah" that caught our ear. The track sees him teaming up with one of rappers quickest ascending artists, Lil Yachty. The song builds on its creepy slow beginning turning into a devilishly good effort. We still don't know if the track will appear on Ferg's highly anticipated upcoming record, Still Striving, but it is certainly a strong indication that we should be expecting something special from the rapper.
The Killers — "The Man"
It's been 13 years since The Killers released their staggering debut album, Hot Fuss, and five years since the band have released their most recent effort, Battle Born. So it's understandable that any new music out of their camp would create waves across the music world. This week they announced their new record, Wonderful Wonderful, would be coming out at some point in the near future — though they gave no exact date for its release. With it, they delivered "The Man", an arena rocking dance track in the vein of David Bowie. The track is an instant classic that will fit seamlessly into The Killers already stacked canon.
