Last month Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty teased KLF fans with a new project. A video collage, that was as weird and bewitching as any of their previous work was released ahead of a poster, shared via their twitter account — promising that new work was on the way.
Today, it seems as if the focus of that 'new work' is a book. Described as a "utopian costume drama, set in the near future, written in the recent past," the name of the book is 2023: A Trilogy, and it's set for publication by Faber & Faber on August 23.
The publishers haven't shared much information in their description of the book, but it's described as "a trilogy by The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu," one of Drummond and Cauty's many aliases. The press release continues the tone of grandeur that the KLF enjoyed back when they were making music: "Down through the epochs and out across the continents, generation upon generation of the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu have told variants of the same story – an end of days story, a final chapter story."
The duo, who famously burned a million pounds in a confusing statement on the value of art, money, and the place where commerce and culture meet, retired from music back in 1992. Back then they deleted their entire catalog, but promised they would return. At this time it's uncertain if the band will be releasing new music — or if the book is the entirety of their promised project.
The enigmatic press release, and the atmosphere that the KLF generated around every aspect of their work is sure to whip fans into a joyous frenzy. A band who thrived on nurturing chaos to inspire unity, creation and love… always with a sacred sense of 'event', are exactly what the world needs in 2017. Perhaps the prophecies were right — perhaps the KLF will save us all.
