The National and Common will play a free concert hosted by Planned Parenthood and All Access on January 19th in Washington D.C., the night before the Presidential inauguration of Donald Trump. Entitled Show Up!, the show serves as a "call to action for supporters of reproductive freedom to take action wherever they are."
The concert will begin at 7 pm at the 9:30 Club and more special guests are reported to be announced in the coming days. The event is free, but tickets are required for entry. The benefit will be hosted by Monica Simpson, the Executive Director of SisterSong, the National Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.
The National lead singer Matt Berninger said in a statement, "Women should be able to make their own decisions about their bodies and health. This is a basic human right, and we're at the very beginning of a long and tough battle to defend these basic rights. A concert in DC, inspiring people to take action, seems like a pretty good way to kick it off."
In December, The National announced that they were donating the profits their online store sales to Planned Parenthood. The band openly supported Hillary Clinton during the election, with Berninger even saying, "She has many flaws. I've got so many flaws and I'm in love with myself. But I give myself a break. So I think she's wonderful, especially the way she's been handling what she's been facing recently and with direct power, elegance. I've totally got a crush on her."
