Earlier this year, The National debuted a new track called "Turtleneck" at a protest gig against the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Then it was announced that they would be playing a slot at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the U.K. which made fans wonder if the live show would be a venue for the sharing of new material. With frontman Matt Berninger saying "We're playing together in a room, which means we're jamming more. But it's not a jam record at all — the songs are much more like weird, math-y, electronic-y stuff. A lot of songs are going in completely different directions. But that's a really fun place to be. We're in the middle of the wilderness, in a rainforest full of really fun noises." it seemed like the new record was closer than we could have hoped. Now, adding excitement to the lives of eager fans the indie rock outfit have shared a very mysterious teaser for the new album.
It's believed that the follow-up to 2013's highly regarded Trouble Will Find Me, will drop later this summer. The teaser, which you can watch below, plays like a distorted news channel showing images and interferences, with the feed reading "Sleep Well Beast" and "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness". The audio is distorted, electronic and angular — matching the description of sounds that Berninger had promised when speaking about the wilderness.
At this point it's unclear if "Sleep Well Beast" or "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness" is the name of a track, the theme, or the title of the album, which Berninger spoke of last fall around the time of the protest gig. At that time he'd suggested that the theme of the album was about marriages, and marriages falling apart. So, whilst things are vague, mesmerising and as distinctive sounding as we could hope, it does seem like unusual business as usual from The National.
