The National's Matt Berninger was recently on Tavis Smiley's PBS show, and talked about his involvement with Hillary Clinton's campaign, the ability for artists to get millennials out to vote, his anti-Trump song, "Are These My Jets", with EL VY, and his wife's help in writing lyrics for the new National album.
Berninger told Smiley that he is a 'progressive', but also that much of his work with Obama and Clinton's campaigns has been in an effort to get young people out to vote. On November 2, The National will play a Get Out the Vote concert for Hillary Clinton in their hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.
A few days ago, Berninger was on the "Rolling Stone Music Now" podcast and said of Clinton, "She has many flaws. I've got so many flaws and I'm in love with myself. But I give myself a break. So I think she's wonderful, especially the way she's been handling what she's been facing recently and with direct power, elegance. I've totally got a crush on her."
Berninger has also opened up about how his and wife are co-writing the lyrics for the upcoming The National album, and he told Smiley, "She's very helpful at sort of helping me to find the soul of a song. Also, she knows when I'm full of [bleep] and she gets me focused on being honest, you know. Emotionally honest and don't posture in songs. There's enough of that, you know. She doesn't want me to waste a song on style or posturing, so she's got very high standards." Watch the interview below:
