On November 13, New York indie poppers The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will release three song EP Hell, a follow up to its 2014 album, Days of Abandon and sneak peak of its upcoming tour. The songs came about, the band says, after folks really liked a demo version of the group's original song, "Hell."
Released via its own label, Painbow, the EP features two additional cover songs, "Ballad of the Band" by Felt and "Laid" by James. The latter (more on that in a minute) features vocals courtesy of Jen Goma, who has recently been sitting in with the band (you can also hear her on TPOBPAH's last album) in addition to her own projects A Sunny Day in Glasgow and People Get Ready.
But here's the thing: When attempting a cover of a song such as "Laid," the 1993 hit song from English rock band James, you've simply got to nail it (amateur karaoke singers, take note). With its evocative lyrics—"she only comes when she's on top"—soaring refrains, and lush production cues, to do otherwise would be an injustice to the track, a cornerstone anthem for James, who, with a smattering of other singles like "Come Home," "Sit Down," and "She's a Star," narrowly avoided being the dreaded "one hit wonder." Fortunately, TPOBPAH slay the rendition, substituting a banshee-like wail for the "Oh, you think you're so pretty-eeeeee" refrain, while employing its typical ethereal, dream pop atmospherics, which nicely fill out the song.
