The Associated Press is reporting that The Pixies canceled their scheduled June 9 performance at the Pic.Nic festival in Tel Aviv after a raid in Gaza. The promoter of the event relayed a statement from the band which confirmed the cancelation. The Pixies expressed "great regret" in the statement, but did not elaborate as to why they jettisoned the show. The event organizers, however, indicated it was due in part the naval raid which occurred last week and claimed the lives of nine pro-Palestinian activists.
Other acts who have called off their participation at the Pic.Nic fest include Gorillaz and Klaxon. Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello also canceled a planned concert to protest Israel's policies on their treatment of Palestinians. Elton John and Rod Stewart, however, will play the region as scheduled his summer.
Should cancel gigs when political strife or unrest occurs in the region they are visiting?
