The Roots Picnic has been occurring annually in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for nearly a decade. In fact, it took place this past weekend. Now, for the first time ever, The Roots Picnic will also be happening in New York City. It will take place October 1st through 2nd in Manhattan's Bryant Park.
D'Angelo, Wu-Tang Clan, David Byrne, Nile Rodgers, Kevin Gates, KRS-One, Jeremih, Deerhoof, John Mayer, EPMD, Swizz Beatz, and more will play at the New York City festival. The Roots will play as the backing band for Wu-Tang, Byrne, and Nile Rodgers. Back in April, The Roots played as the backing band for David Byrne at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The Roots' Questlove has most recently been working on the Hamilton Mixtape, on which Chance the Rapper, Busta Rhymes, Common, Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, and Queen Latifah will all make appearances. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton won the GRAMMY Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, and will also be heading out on tour. Questlove was the executive producer on the musical's soundtrack.
The musical is currently set to go on its first U.S. tour in March 2017. The first 21 weeks of the show's tour will be played at San Francisco's SHN Orpheum Theatre, then it will head to Los Angeles' Hollywood Pantages Theatre from August through December.
