The Shins to Release New Album

On the heels of its festive (and Mariah Carey trumping) Paul McCartney cover, "Wonderful Christmastime," Columbia Records today announced that beloved indie darlings The Shins will release new music in 2016. It will be the Albuquerque-to-Portland's band first full length album since 2012's Port of Morrow.
The sands have been shifting at the glimmering beachfront that is The Shins. Frontman James Mercer's popular side project with Brian Burton of Danger Mouse, Broken Bells, is still going strong, and a venture that reportedly inspired him to part ways with longtime Shins bandmates Dave Hernandez, Marty Crandall, and Jesse Sandoval. Newly configured, the band contributed "So Now What" to Zach Braff's 2014 film, Wish I Was Here, and recorded a live, vinyl-only album, Live at Third Man Records 10-8-2012.
As it goes, the ball seems to be ever in Mercer's court. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, he sounded pretty pleased about the rise of his band's 2012 Christmas tune "Wonderful Christmastime." "Well, we've always been super-popular on the Island of Misfit Toys so it was just a matter of time before the human world embraced our incredible Christmas spirit!"
