The Slants Premiere"Level Up"

Portland quartet The Slants — vocalist Ken Shima, guitarist Joe X. Jiang, drummer Yuya Matsuda, and founder/bassist Simon Tam (aka Simon Young) have experienced a good deal of controversy in their few years of being a band. Having attempted to trademark their name they were told that the term "The Slants" was a disparaging term, and they were rejected in their application.
The court proceedings, and the band's attempts to bring light onto racism, and the issues facing diverse communities around the USA, served to highlight their worldview — as more than just a band trying to trademark their name.
In response to the challenges that the band has faced they released the EP The Band Who Must Not Be Named, which they're currently taking out on the road with an extensive set of tour dates. From that EP is new track, "Level Up" which we're premiering here today.
We invited Joe X Jiang to introduce the video for "Level Up" and to share some insights into the origins of the song and the process of transferring the sounds into images. Here's what he said:
