In many ways, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope encapsulates all of the best elements of The Smashing Pumpkins.

With Oceania, their next collection earmarked for a September 1st release, it's only fitting to take a look back at the band's most recent batch of self-released tunes in this project thus far.

Teargarden drifts from dreamy darkness into an off kilter heaviness that possesses the same passion and power Gish and Siamese Dream touted. At the same time, Teargarden feels as evolved and epic as Zeitgeist or Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. However, this is a new level for The Pumpkins and rock 'n' roll in terms of both release and content.

After what an ethereal keyboard build-up, "The Fellowship" marches forward under the hum of guitar fuzz. The song snaps into one of Billy Corgan's most propulsive choruses to date as he asks, "Are you with us or against us tonight?"

In the same breath, "Freak" rolls from rousing distortion into an anthemic arena-ready rock with a fiery, focused display of fret glory. "Tom Tom" treads the alternative psychedelic territory that Corgan carved out so many years ago, volleying from an ethereal intro into a stomping beat. Then there's "Spangled" which rises from hazy gorgeous guitars into a piano-driven verse that's so timeless it could work in England in the late '60s or America in the '00s. That's the mark of true genius. Corgan writes tunes that work for any time or place, and he's only getting better at it with each note he commits to tape.

"Lightning Strikes" sears with cinematic intensity and a muted heavy verse that pierces the psyche and takes up residence. "Owata" may very well be one of the most beautiful and brilliant songs that Corgan has ever written. With the recently released video here, The Smashing Pumpkins continue another career tradition of subtle, yet impactful music videos more like cinema verite than another clip set to song.

Teargarden is another undeniable rock masterpiece from one of the greatest songwriters in history. Oceania is up next and anxiously awaited. Are you with them?
