The Top Ten Songs About Birds
Fri, 07 Oct 2011 13:34:07
This playlist is for the birds! Literally! In honor of the late, great American author, poet, and generally creepy looking guy, Edgar Allen Poe, we have compiled the top ten songs that remind us of "The Raven." Yes, we mean the famous poem- not your high school nickname. Let's fly away into the nest of bird songs, shall we?
In honor of the impending release of Relativity Media's The Raven on March 9th, 2012 and the anniversary of Poe's death October 7th, we've compiled this list.
"Blackbird" - The Beatles
A classic, contemplative and wistful tune from the best band to ever touch earth- this track is soft and beautiful, just like my biceps!
"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Man, those classic rock bands love their songs about birds! This is our favorite and most long-winded rocker, as it evolves from a bluesy ballad to a barn-burning jam session.
"Narcissistic Cannibal" - Korn
Apparently this brand new single from Korn was originally called "Bird Death." Co-written by dubstep superstar Skrillex, this track explodes in a fury of melodies, blasts and wobbles. In short: it's incredible.
"Learn To Fly" - Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters know their way around a soaring melody (oh yeah- pun intended!). Dave Grohl and the gang replicate the feeling of flying through the air. You can almost feel the cityscape beneath you as the bright, cold air washes your body in flight when you listen to this. Especially if you’re on some crazy drugs!
"Talking Bird" - Death Cab for Cutie
Singer Ben Gibbard muses on his talking bird, personifying it and creating an ode to his parrot- even if he may not have much to say.
"beak-holding-letter-man" - Mike Watt
A bright, jammy number from a punk icon- Watt’s bass and guitars intertwine like no one else's. All hail the Pride of San Pedro! From Hyphenated-Man.
"Shake Your Tail Feather" - P. Diddy, Nelly, Murphy Lee
A shallow party anthem, or a carefully construed social commentary through song? Actually, it’s just a shallow party anthem- from the Bad Boys II soundtrack, no less. But that doesn't make me want to dance any less!
"White Feather" - Wolfmother
With their trademark, kinky-distorted guitars, Wolfmother wail about a very special girl- the one with the white feather. It's a little ditty from their commercially so-so second album, Cosmic Egg- another bird tie-in!
"Little Wing" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Nobody will ever play guitar like Jimi. His soul lies between those six strings, and you can feel it in every unmistakable lick and bend of a note he plays. "Little Wing" is one of his classics- with an opening riff for which the devil himself would sell his soul! I’m guessing, anyway.
"A Crow Left of the Murder" - Incubus
Isn't it funny that a group of crows is called a "murder?" Not a flock, or even a gaggle. I guess crows are pretty dark and mysterious birds, and this only adds to the mystique. This song, off Incubus’ eponymous 2004 album, twists and turns from elegant note-hopping to furious garage rock intensity- all in four minutes or less!
There is our tribute to our fine, feathered friends of the sky and occasional bird cage. Do you know why the caged bird sings? Probably because it has our playlist on their mp3 player.
