The Vatican Newspaper Calls The Blues Brothers a "Catholic Film" - Really? Belushi and Aykroyd in a Catholic yarn? I don't see it

L'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, has bestowed the classic, 1980 comedy The Blues Brothers, with an endorsement of being a "Catholic film." The film starred comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues, who felt they were on a mission from God.

"This is a memorable film, and, judging by the facts, a Catholic one," the paper wrote. On the film's 30th anniversary, the Vatican devoted five articles to the topic, says Reuters. The Vatican looked at Jake's story specifically, focusing on how he was released from prison and then worked to reunite his blues band in order to save St. Helen of the Blessed Shroud Orphanage, as an emulation of the life of Christ.

Would you deem The Blues Brothers a Catholic film? Is the Vatican out of its mind? Wait, don't answer that…
