Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise, has a release date: June 30, 2010. New Moon, the second film, is currently filming and will be released in November of this year.
Twilight has grossed $363 million in worldwide box office receipts, making it Summit's tentpole franchise. The studio has yet to choose a director for Eclipse. Catherine Hardwicke, who directed Twilight, bowed out of a big payday for New Moon since she didn't want to make the film on a rushed schedule. She was replaced by Chris Weitz. Hardwicke will release Twilight: Director's Notebook on March 17. The book is inspired by the on-set journal she kept while shooting the movie. The DVD of the film hits shelves on March 21.
While New Moon will explore heroine Bella's immersion into the world of werewolves, which are the ancestral enemies of vampires, Eclipse finds her forced to choose between Jacob and Edward. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner will reprise their roles as Bella, Edward, and Jacob in New Moon and are expected to do the same in Eclipse.
