The cast of I Am Number Four—Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, director D.J. Caruso—sat down with ARTISTdirect.com to discuss their thrilling new action film, which doesn't scrimp on storyline like many films of its ilk. They talked about how the film deftly balances action with storyline and storytelling. Caruso is quick to point out that the depth of the characters is what gets the audience locked in and caring, and thus allows them to grab on the action in the film.
The film also explores how "everyone feels like an alien in high school" and what it is like "being the outsider" when you don't really want to be popular, even though you think you do. Who hasn't experienced that emotion? Raise your hand if you have!
The elder statesman Olyphant, who is surrounded by a young cast, talks about his character's role as a sort of a life coach, where he strikes the balance between being compassionate and being as tough as nails in order to survive.
The film also focuses on portraying teens in an accurate light, so that more viewers can relate to them.
Music also plays a role in the film, and Caruso talks about Adele having a track in the film, while Olyphant confesses his love for Florence & the Machine. Caruso who admits that "Eddie Vedder got me through the '90s" also says that he digs Pearl Jam's "Black" even more than Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven," while Olyphant, an avid Pearl Jam fan, talks about it as a bit of a stretch…
