Todd Terje, YG, Mitski Make Summer Sizzle In Top Albums Of The Week - June 11-17

Some stellar albums were released this week and it's clear we are steadily moving into summer. Red Hot Chili Peppers have returned with their first album in five years, The Getaway, and it's the kind of album that reminds you barbecue-and-pool season is finally here. Neil Young's EARTH, a collection of songs from across his career about food awareness, continues on themes from Young's last album, The Monsanto Years. Last year, Bruce Hornsby made a high-profile tour with the Grateful Dead; now he has returned with his band The Noisemakers to release their first album in five years, Rehab Reunion, which certainly keeps up the live spirit of the Dead even though it was recorded in the studio.
If you are unsure about your feelings on metal, Gojira's sixth album, Magma, might be the one that turns you toward the metallic side. It avoids the genre's usual cliches and is inspiringly creative. It's been almost two decades since the last Red Sleeping Beauty album, but it has been a year of comebacks and the band has finally returned with the sleek Kristina. And that was only the beginning for a week full of amazing new albums.
Here are our favorites:
Todd Terje & The Olsen's - The Big Cover-Up - Olsen Records
There are few things that remind us of summer more than Todd Terje. Mixmag once dubbed him "King of summer jams," and they couldn't be more correct. The Big Cover Up is infectious and fun as a beachside summer party on a distant tropical island.
Swans - The Glowing Man - Young God, Mute
34 years and 14 albums, Swans has had quite the career. The Glowing Man may very well be Swans final album in their current iteration, and this two-hour epic shows off just how spectacular the band has been.
Mitski - Puberty 2 - Dead Oceans Records
We've been waiting on the release of Puberty 2 for months, and it does not disappoint. It's a punk rock confessional that is as personal a record as we've heard in awhile. Just listen.
case/lang/veirs - case/lang/veirs
Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs created case/lang/veirs over the course of three years. Each brings their own special abilities to the record, and yet no one steals the spotlight. It's refreshing to hear three stars work together so harmoniously.
YG - Still Brazy
YG's second album, Still Brazy, is very much the product of his Compton environment and the current state of rap. It's not that YG is bringing anything particularly new to the scene, he just does what he does so well that you have to stop and take note.
